TODAY'S TOP TALKING POINT

To protect Oregon’s quality of life,  we must create an environment where businesses, small and large, are encouraged to create jobs. As Governor, Chris will support temporary, targeted incentives - such as tax breaks, enterprise zones, and job training - for emerging and existing business sectors to help spur job growth.  In order to ensure taxpayer dollars are being spent wisely, incentives will be performance-based and will be awarded transparently and on the basis of job creation and economic returns.

IN THE NEWS

Over the past two weeks, Chris has traveled to Portland, Bend, Medford, and Eugene hosting Policy Roundtable Discussions about how we can get Oregonians back to work.  Check out some of the coverage from our roundtables:

Republican Chris Dudley hears about jobs and taxes in Bend

By Hillary Borrud

The Bend Bulletin

July 28. 2010

Taxes, land use laws and a state government focused on the needs of the more populous Willamette Valley make an economic rebound difficult, local business people told Republican gubernatorial candidate Chris Dudley on Tuesday.

Fourteen local business people and industry representatives attended the nearly two-hour roundtable at The Riverhouse in Bend on Tuesday morning. They came from industries including development, real estate, tourism, land use law, and cable and Internet providers.

The stop was the latest in a series of economic discussions that Dudley has scheduled across the state, from Portland to Klamath Falls.  Democratic candidate and former governor John Kitzhaber stopped in Bend in June, during a cross-state campaign tour.

What works?

Dudley asked participants to tell him which aspects of state government work and which do not, and to suggest ways to rebuild the state's economy. Ideas from roundtables across the state will be incorporated into Dudley's economic plan, he said.

“The number one issue facing our state is jobs, and job creation,” Dudley said. “You all have knowledge on how to create jobs. That's why you're important.”

...

“Oregon's budget is growing faster than our taxpayers can afford,” Dudley said. “We don't need more taxes, we need more taxpayers — and that's why we're here today.”

The economic picture for Central Oregon, and the rest of the state, is grim, Dudley said. Oregon's unemployment rate has remained higher than the national average for 15 years.

Attendees at the event said Oregon's tax and land use systems are inhospitable to businesses.

Steve Buettner, president of SunWest Builders, said his company faces an additional $75,000 to $80,000 in expenses this year due to an increase in unemployment taxes, higher health insurance and tax increases under Measures 66 and 67, which raised corporate and personal income taxes on the wealthiest Oregonians.

“I look at that, and I just don't know how we can sustain that,” Buettner said.

Chris Dudley: Summer Break
Saturday, 17 July 2010 22:34

Getting ready to head home from our long weekend in CO.  We had a great time hanging with the kids' godfather, going on hikes, playing games, and we even went whitewater rafting! Charles, Emma, and Sam had a blast - everyone loved Charles' green sunglasses that he even had on while we were on the river!  Check out the pictures here!

While there I did have to mix a little work with pleasure and took the time to sit with a few governors from around the country including Gov. Linda Lingle.  Everyone is excited about our campaign and hopeful that we will be able to get OR working again with new leadership and fresh ideas.

Unfortunately, I had to miss a debate with John Kitzhaber on Friday but I am really looking forward to debating him in the coming months and I hope he is looking forward to it as well.

Tomorrow I am back at it and will be co-Grand Marshal at the Great American Stock Car Series NASCAR race in PDX.  Next week we will be kicking off our Jobs Policy Roundtables in Portland and Medford so make sure you stay tuned to the blog and follow our updates here on Facebook.   While the midsummer trip was a nice break, I am really looking forward to getting back to work and back out on the campaign trail!

Chris Dudley: Happy Fourth of July!
Monday, 05 July 2010 02:11

As we all celebrate this Independence Day, I would like to extend a special thank you to all those who have sacrificed so much for the freedom we celebrate today.  I encourage each of you to give thanks for all of the blessings we have because we live in this great country.

I wish you a very safe and enjoyable Independence Day!

Learn More About Chris: Dick Kuchen, Former Yale University Basketball Coach
Wednesday, 23 June 2010 16:58

I met Chris during his college years at Yale.  It was clear then that he had leadership qualities and was going places. I coached college basketball for 34 years and one of the things that stood out to me about Chris was his work ethic -- not just on the floor but in everything he did.  Yale is tough academically and very competitive -- and in basketball and in the classroom, Chris showed that he was not only competitive and athletically gifted, but smart and hard-working. He was a team leader, modeling a solid work ethic and a real drive to win, to get it done.

But it wasn't easy and Chris faced obstacles, from dealing with his diabetes to attracting the attention of NBA scouts -- which isn’t automatic at Yale.  But he got the NBA's attention, and I remember when a scout came to one of our games and I watched Chris make that scout believe that he could make it in the NBA where he did in fact enjoy a long and successful career.  And the training and work-outs were more difficult for Chris because of his diabetes. He had to take great care of himself and really manage his diet and , which he did well, and the disease never held him back.

Chris has an impact on just about everyone he meets.

When the grandson of a good friend of mine was recently diagnosed with diabetes, he was really upset when he thought he wouldn't be playing basketball anymore. I suggested he contact Chris to try to get into his camp. The grandson did, and his grandfather told me that Chris had changed his life. He said Chris taught the kids never to let diabetes stand in their way. Unlike some, Chris doesn't just talk, he actually DOES -- and actions speak louder than words.  Because of his own experience with health issues and his awareness of the difficulties children and all those with diabetes face, he’s said that one of his goals as governor will be to raise awareness about childhood obesity and promote a healthier lifestyle for kids.

Chris Dudley: Happy Father's Day!
Sunday, 20 June 2010 19:17

Being a father to my three kids - Charles, Emma, and Sam - is the greatest gift in my life, my proudest accomplishment, and the toughest job I will ever have.  But with great kids like them it makes it very easy to be their Dad.

Happy Father's Day to all of the fathers around Oregon and of course to my own dad who was always there to guide me and teach me the important things in life.

Happy Father's Day!

Chris

Chris Dudley: Memorial Day
Monday, 31 May 2010 00:00

In the early days of World War II, General George Marshall was asked if America had a secret weapon that would ensure victory in the war. "Yes," Marshall replied. "Our secret weapon is the best darned kids in the world."

Marshall's words were true then, and they have been true in the nearly seventy years that have passed since. Freedom is alive and well precisely because the best darned kids in the world have risked their lives in places like Normandy, Midway, Korea, Vietnam, Iraq and Afghanistan.

On this Memorial Day, I join with all Oregonians in remembering and thanking all those who have worn or who wear the uniform of our country. Our special thoughts and prayers are with the members of the Oregon National Guard who are serving in Iraq and Afghanistan.
